The IPS Thelen Library provides access for IPS student, faculty, staff, and IPS research center scholars to the following electronic and online services:

PsycNet, an online service from the American Psychological Association (APA), includes two databases.  The PsycArticles part of this online service provides full text access to articles published from 1985 to the present from more than 53 psychology related journals.  The PsycInfo part of the PsycNet service provides citations and abstracts of more than 1.9 million references to books, book chapters, technical reports, and dissertations, and of articles from more than 1,900 journal titles published from 1887 to the present.

PsycBooks  is a full-text database of more than 600 books and chapters primarily published by APA. It also includes the exclusive 1,500 entries from the APA/University of Oxford Press Encyclopedia of Psychology (link to book page) as well as a number of classic books from the early 1900's.

EBSCOhost Collections

The IPS Thelen Library subscribes to seven EBSCOhost Collections, four of which are full text databases:

  • The Psychology & Behavioral Sciences Collection is a comprehensive database providing nearly 550 full text publications, including more than 500 peer-reviewed journals. The database covers topics such as emotional and behavioral characteristics, psychiatry & psychology, mental processes, anthropology, and observational and experimental methods. In addition to the full text, indexing and abstracts are provided for all journals in the collection.  Full text information in this database dates as far back as 1965.
  • The Religion & Philosophy Collection is a comprehensive database covering such topics as world religions, major denominations, biblical studies, religious history, epistemology, political philosophy, philosophy of language, moral philosophy and the history of philosophy. This database offers more than 300 full text journals, including more than 250 peer-reviewed titles, making it an essential tool for researchers and students of theology and philosophical studies. In addition to the full text, indexing and abstracts are provided for journals in the database. Full text information in this database dates as far back as 1975.
  • The ATLA (American Theological Library Association) Religion Database  provides information on topics such as biblical studies, world religions, church history, and religion in social issues. ATLA contains more than one million bibliographic records covering the research literature of religion in 35 languages. It includes more than 350,000 article citations from 600 journals, more than 200,000 essay citations from 15,500 multi-author works, and over 360,000 book review citations. An essential resource for researchers and students in theology as well as in social sciences, history and humanities, most coverage in this database spans from 1949 to the present. This database is produced by the American Theological Library Association.
  • The ATLA Religion Database with ATLA Serials is the premier index to journal articles, book reviews, and collections of essays in all fields of religion. More than 600 journals are indexed annually. The database includes more than 1.3 million bibliographic records for journal articles, more than 200,000 essay citations from 15,300 multi-author works, and more than 400,000 book review citations. This database begins in 1949 although indexing for some journal titles extend back into the nineteenth century. Links are provided to 100,000 full text articles in ATLASerials, from more than fifty journals selected by religion scholars in the United States. This database is produced by the American Theological Library Association.
  • The Catholic Periodical and Literature Index Online is the product of a partnership between ATLA and the Catholic Library Association which covers all aspects of the Catholic faith and lifestyle. The database includes indexed citations to articles published in Roman Catholic periodicals, Papal documents, church promulgations, and books about the Catholic faith that are authored by Catholics and/or produced by Catholic publishers. Indexing for Catholic Periodical and Literature Index Online corresponds to the print version, The Catholic Periodical and Literature Index, published by the Catholic Library Association. Catholic Periodical and Literature Index Online contains more than 300,000 records covering Roman Catholic publications including, but not limited to, periodicals, books, newspapers, and papal documents. Coverage in the database dates back to 1981.
  • The Sociological Collection is a comprehensive database covering information in all areas of sociology, including social behavior, human tendencies, interaction, relationships, community development, culture and social structure. This database provides full text articles from more than 500 important journals, including nearly 500 peer-reviewed titles. In addition to the full text, indexing and abstracts are provided for all 525 journals in the collection. Full text information in this database dates as far back as 1965.
  • SocINDEX with Full Text SocINDEX with Full Text is the world's most comprehensive and highest quality sociology research database. The database features more than 1,918,000 records with subject headings from a 19,300+ term sociological thesaurus designed by subject experts and expert lexicographers. SocINDEX with Full Text contains full text for 428 "core" coverage journals dating back to 1908, and 136 "priority" coverage journals. This database also includes full text for more than 720 books and monographs, and full text for 6,785 conference papers.


Origins-Plus, an online service of the Catholic News Service, provides over 1,400 text documents of the Catholic Church back to 1996.  The documents include encyclicals, speeches and other papal messages to pastoral letters by the bishops, diocesan policy statements, current research, speeches in the news, and much more.

ProQuest Science & Engineering Thesis & Dissertations, a full text database of dissertations in the field of psychology from the 1800’s to the present. This database is from ProQuest.

EBSCO Electronic Journals Services (EJS) provides full text access to the Library’s 51 ejournal subscriptions, as well as access to the citations and abstracts of more than 8,000 journals, the table of contents of more than 12,000 journals, and pay-per-view full text access to more than 3,000 journals.

POEISIS, a database of 43 philosophy journals which provides full text access to more than 10 journals for which the Thelen Library maintains a subscription.  The full text is provided for the most recent issues for the past five (5) years; and the table of contents is provided for all titles.

Blackwell-Synergy Journals provides full text access to more than 800 journals in all subject areas.

Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy a dynamic online version of the printed encyclopedia.

Encyclopaedia Britannica (VIVA Collection Shared Resource), the online, daily updated version of the printed title with interactive video, statistics, news feeds from the New York Times and BBC News, an atlas, quotations, the Merriam-Webster Dictionary & Thesaurus, and other information. 

Gale Academic OneFile (VIVA Collection Shared Resource), Academic OneFile is the premier source for peer-reviewed, full-text articles from the world's leading journals and reference sources. With extensive coverage of the physical sciences, technology, medicine, social sciences, the arts, theology, literature and other subjects from 1980 - MAR, 2008, Academic OneFile is both authoritative and comprehensive. With millions of articles available in both PDF and HTML full-text with no restrictions, researchers are able to find accurate information quickly. Includes full-text coverage of the New York Times back to 1995. Updated daily.   

Gale MLA Bibliography (VIVA Collection Shared Resource)  The MLA International Bibliography indexes books, articles and dissertations published on modern languages, literatures, folklore, and linguistics, providing coverage from 1926 to the present. It includes the MLA Thesaurus and the MLA Directory of Periodicals, which lists detailed information on over 5,500 journals, including over 4,400 indexed in the Bibliography

Oxford English Dictionary (VIVA Collection Shared Resource) The Oxford English Dictionary is the accepted authority on the evolution of the English language over the last millennium. It is an unsurpassed guide to the meaning, history, and pronunciation of over half a million words, both present and past. It traces the usage of words through 2.5 million quotations from a wide range of international English language sources, from classic literature and specialist periodicals to film scripts and cookery books.

OCLC FirstSearch (VIVA Collection Shared Resource), is a collection of 34 databases across all subjects, and includes WorldCat, the OCLC database of the collection holdings of libraries throughout the world which is used for resource sharing or InterLibrary Loan activity.

Medline (VIVA Collection Shared Resource, forthcoming), a database created by the National Library of Medicine of the National Institutes of Health.

ERIC (VIVA Collection Shared Resource, forthcoming), a database created by the U. S. Department of Education covering all areas of education, including school psychology/counseling, psychological assessment, and child and adolescent psychology.

Announcements will be made regarding new or trial services to be added the collection.


Access to Electronic/Online Resources

These resources are restricted to authorized patrons

There are two ways to access to the Library’s electronic/online resources listed above:

1.   At the Library’s public computer workstations, click on the IPS Thelen Library OPAC icon, then go to the Knowledge Portal and select the service you would like to search.

2.   Remote access from home or other location is possible using the IPS VPN.  For more information on accessing these resources remotely, go to the Mary S.
