IPS asks for Feedback

Approximately 20 students attended the IPS Town Hall meeting on Monday, January 25 to answer faculty questions about their experience in the program thus far. Representing the faculty were Dr. William Nordling and Dr. Stephen Hamel, who inquired about any concerns students might have.

Topics discussed ranged from praise for the warm, welcoming attitudes of faculty members to suggestions on more effective use of “lab” time during practicum classes. Students were divided on some issues. For example, during mock clinical interviews, some felt “put on the spot” before their peers while others opined that overcoming stage fright is part of the learning process. One solution offered would be smaller lab sections if that can be arranged.

Some students were particularly impressed by the level of detail taught about ensuring the dignity and comfort of clients (“excellent bedside manner”) in addition to the technical excellence being demanded of them.

The philosophy, anthropology and history classes were also discussed, with little doubt about the immense value of the deep philosophical foundations being explored by the school’s future psychologists.

Students also expressed opinions on a new location for IPS to facilitate the demands required by an ever-increasing student body. Faculty response was that the Institute would not go out beyond the Beltway.

Overall the tone was upbeat and positive, and the free pizza and soft drinks were well appreciated by students and faculty alike.
