IPS Professor Earns Prominent Certification

The Institute for the Psychological Sciences is pleased to announce the certification of Associate Professor Stephen H. Hamel, Ph.D., by the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP).

The ABPP is the primary organization for specialty board certification in psychology. To receive board certification, psychologists must successfully complete the rigorous educational, training, and experience requirements of their specialty, including an examination designed to assess the competencies required to provide quality services in that specialty.

According to ABPP President Nadine J. Kaslow, Ph.D., ABPP, certification is recognized by professional psychologists as the "gold standard of board certification."

"Dr. Hamel's ABPP certification demonstrates that IPS not only has competent academicians teaching our students but competent clinicians as well," noted IPS Academic Dean Gladys M. Sweeney, Ph.D.

IPS Department of Psychology Chairman Dr. William H. Nordling, Ph.D., added, "We are very proud of Dr. Stephen Hamel who has obtained his Board Certification from the American Board of Professional Psychology - a distinction that only 5% of psychologists achieve."

A member of the IPS faculty for 3 years, Dr. Hamel is currently the Director of the Master of Clinical Psychology program.

In addition to his ABPP certification, Dr. Hamel is a licensed psychologist in the states of New Jersey and Virginia, is a Diplomate in Behavioral Medicine at the International Academy of Behavioral Medicine, Counseling and Psychotherapy (IABMCP), and a Diplomate in Professional Counseling (IABMCP).

Dr. Hamel is also a Licensed RN, a Certified School Psychologist, and is Trauma/ Disaster certified by the American Red Cross.

Included among the IPS faculty earning ABPP certification is Associate Professor and Director of Clinical Training Dr. Philip Scrofani, Ph.D.
