IPS Student Named General Manager of Catholic Radio Station

Part-time master’s student Irene Lagan is the new General Manager for WMET 1160, an AM Catholic radio station serving the Washington, DC Metropolitan area. The station was recently acquired by Guadalupe Radio Network headquartered in Midland, TX.

“It's a privilege to be part of the Guadalupe Radio Network,” said Irene. “I look forward to helping establish Guadalupe Radio in the DC area as a network that helps foster and serve the needs of the local Catholic community. It's definitely a challenge!”

Prior to returning to pursue her studies at IPS, Irene worked extensively in journalism for a number of national and international news outlets. Her employment history includes:

  • Radio Reporter/Producer and Journalist (Vatican Radio, Rome, Italy);
  • Freelance Journalist (Washington, DC; Rome, Italy;
  • Natick, MA); Writer/Blogger (InsideCatholic.com - Rome, Italy);
  • President, International Association for Group Development (Hebbronville, TX and Paris, France);
  • Adjunct Professor, Introductory Psychology (Pepperdine University - Washington, DC);
  • Writer/Reporter (Arlington Catholic Herald - Arlington, VA);
  • Managing Editor (National Catholic Bioethics Center (NCBC) - Boston, MA);
  • Media Relations Director (Massachusetts Citizens for Life - Boston, MA).

Irene’s academic credentials include a B.A. in Psychology/Art Therapy from Regis College in Weston, MA and an M.A. in Philosophy from Franciscan University in Steubenville, OH. She also earned a Baccalaureate of Sacred Theology from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome, Italy, and completed Intercultural/Inter religious Studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University, Cardinal Bea Centre for Judaic Studies in Rome, Italy.

Having recently concluded the Fall 2010 Semester at IPS, Irene shares her thoughts about the Institute and its community, “Even though I’m not enrolled full-time, I was genuinely moved by the warmth and welcome of faculty, staff and students.”

Irene went on to say, “I also genuinely appreciate the academic caliber of the professors and students, the mix and diversity of students, the quality of discussions, and the freedom to discuss ideas openly in a truly "catholic" environment that at the same time is deeply rooted in the pursuit of truth. I am very much looking forward to next semester.”

When asked how she plans to utilize her graduate degree in psychology, Irene offered, “I have always wanted to be an instrument of healing. Once I complete the master’s degree, I will pursue clinical training so as to integrate all that I have learned with actual practice. “

Irene notes that although she has a variety of interest s and can see herself working in a number of different settings, she is is considering working with adoptive children and their families or with people recovering from trauma.
