IPS mourns the passing of Fr. Richard John Neuhaus

Dr. Gladys Sweeney, IPS founder and academic dean, reflects on the passing of Fr. Richard John Neuhaus and the influential role he played in IPS’ early years.

Fr. Richard John Neuhaus was always extremely supportive of IPS from its very inception. On two occasions, I spent time with him at his office in New York when IPS was just beginning.

I sought his wise advice about the integration of philosophy and theology with psychology, and about psychology in general.

Fr. Neuhaus had a keen interest in seeing IPS succeed, particularly in the transformation of psychology. On numerous occasions, especially at the beginning, he took my calls asking for advice and consultation. His unwavering support and encouragement for the mission of the Institute was truly inspiring and affirming.

During our 2002–2003 John Henry Cardinal Newman Lecture Series entitled, On Wings of Faith and Reason, Fr. Neuhaus was a guest speaker and presented, Newman’s Second Spring – Once Again.  As you might imagine, his talk was deeply insightful and very well received.

On Feb. 10, 2003, at The Library of Congress, Fr. Neuhaus took part in the Inauguration of the first IPS President, Rev. Richard Gill, LC by delivering greetings at the investiture.  In May 2003, Fr. Neuhaus was conferred a Doctor of Humane Letters from the Institute for the Psychological Sciences.  He was also so kind to give the commencement address to our graduates.

I am deeply saddened by his passing and The Institute has lost a wonderful friend, supporter, and mentor.
